Carol Bartz is recorded in a list of 100 most powerful women in the world according to Forbes magazine, August 2011. He occupied the position of No. 37.
However, if sorted by industry, Bartz ranks fifth among the women who deals in the IT field in the list.
Despite being in the top position in Yahoo, Bartz was still shaken. In fact, he reportedly fired only through phone calls.
Batz firing incident was reminiscent of Carly Fiorina, Hewlett-Packard CEO who was forced to resign from office in 2005.
Is this an indication that the peak position in the IT industry can not be occupied by women?
When viewed from the list of Forbes Top 10 for the position of women in the IT industry are as follows:
1. Sheryl Sandberg, COO, Facebook (5)
2. Melinda Gates, cofounder and cochair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (6)
3. Susan Wojcicki, SVP of Advertising, Google (16)
4. Cher Wang, cofounder and chair, HTC; VIA Technologies (20)
5. Carol Bartz, CEO, Yahoo (37)
6. Safra Catz, president, Oracle (40)
7. Marissa Mayer, VP, Local, Maps, & Location Services, Google (42)
8. Katie Jacobs Stanton, VP, International Strategy, Twitter (56)
9. Virginia Rometty, SVP, Group Executive Sales, Marketing and Strategy, IBM (82)
From that list, it appears that Bartz is the only one who served as CEO. And now, of course, Bartz was not the CEO anymore.
Just to compare, most (if not all) of the CEOs 'legendary' in the IT industry is male. Just look at Bill Gates (who retired in peace), Steve Jobs (also backward) or Larry Ellison (Oracle still in bud).
Of course, seeing it merely by looking at the gender difference is unfair. Yahoo's Board of Commissioners would have Bartz reasons behind the dismissal.
Moreover, certainly not least sexed male CEO who was fired from the top of the IT industry. Just look at the incidence of Mark Hurd, CEO Hewlett-Packard, who was ousted in 2010.
A more plausible reason is a matter of business. IT industry is currently facing many changes with the rise of new players such as Facebook or Twitter. Changing the helmsman could be the main choice to make the changes for old players like Yahoo.
